Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has gained attention recently in the mainstream media for it's ability to improve some of the symptoms of autism.  A recent double blind study has shown promising results for children with autism spectrum disorders and neurological symptoms.

While this is great news we've known of the benefits of HBOT for other neurological conditions such as Cerebral Paulsy for quite some time now.  Not only can HBOT improve certain disease states but it has been popular with athletes wishing to gain an edge on the competition by improving healing times and speeding recovery from rigourous training schedules or improve the rate of recovery from injuries.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy improves oxygen delivery and utilization in the tissues by creating an optimum environment in which a descent in altitude is reproduced within the chamber environment.  This 'artificial' descent in altitude reporoduces all of the benefits of increased atmospheric pressure in which the oxygen levels in the air you breathe in ambient air is increased from 21% to 30% saturation.

This atmospheric change in oxygen levels equates to a 300% increase in oxygen saturation within the tissues and significantly improves recovery times.  When used in conjunction with an oxygen concentrator the level of oxygen within the air can be increased to 80 or 90% which translates into a tissue oxygen saturation level that is 3000% greater.

Boyle's law is the fundamental law of physics by which HBOT works.  Boyle's law states that all things flow from high pressure systems to low pressure systems.  HBOT creates a synthetic environment which increases the pressure outside of your body (within the chamber) and forces the oxygen to flow from this new high pressure environment to your body's tissues which are now lower in pressure as a result of the HBOT.
